The 3-Layer Principle

Product Guide » The 3-Layer Principle

DRESSING ACCORDING TO THE 3-LAYER PRINCIPLE IS GOOD PRACTICE WHEN WORKING OUTDOORS IN DIFFERENT WEATHER CONDITIONS.

Dressing in layers allows employees to stay dry and maintain a comfortable body temperature by removing or adding layers as needed. The 3-layer principle consists of: a base layer for moisture removal, an insulating mid layer, and a waterproof outer layer for protection against wind and weather.

1. MOISTURE-WICKING BASE LAYER

The innermost layer should be lightweight, snug-fitting, and wick moisture away from the body. The best materials with moisture-wicking properties are synthetic materials like polyester and polyamide or natural materials like merino wool. These materials also dry quickly.

2. INSULATING MID LAYER

Xplor develops inner jackets made of synthetic insulating materials, including fleece, quilt, and pile jackets. The advantage is that these materials can retain heat even when exposed to moisture. When performing high-intensity tasks, it is best to use a middle layer that is as breathable as possible, as it helps move moisture away from the body.

Accumulated moisture and condensation caused by cold bridges can be reduced by appropriate use of the middle layer. Read about our different material types to find out which ones best suit your needs.

3. OUTER LAYER FOR PROTECTION AGAINST WIND AND WEATHER

The final and outermost layer should be windproof and waterproof while also being breathable. A good outer layer is made of a durable fabric. High-quality shell jackets have all these properties. The more breathable the fabric, the more moisture can be removed from the body, and the better comfort the user will have.

Xplor shell jackets are windproof, waterproof, breathable, and fully taped with a water-repellent finish. We have developed a zipper system that allows for combining inner and middle layers to create a 3-in-1 jacket.
